Planning on hosting a barbecue at your place for the family and all your mates, or looking forward to finally attacking that long-overdue home maintenance project on your public holiday on Thursday?

Checking the opening hours of the country’s largest retail chains, including the major supermarkets, Bunnings, Chemist Warehouse and Kmart should be your first move ahead of racing out and stocking up on the big day. Here is a quick guide to what will be open.

COLES

The major supermarket chain will operate as normal on January 26, apart from in South Australia, where stores in only the following locations will be open: Berri, Mount Barker, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge Green, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Rundle Place, Victor Harbour and Whyalla.

Coles has advised customers to check with their local store or on the company’s website, as there may be slight differences in trading hours between stores.

WOOLWORTHS

All Woolworths stores will be open in Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT, with a small number of exceptions to regular trading hours in other states.

In Victoria, every Woolies will be open except Bourke St and Collins Square on Thursday, while the North Sydney and Eastlakes Metro stores will be closed, but all others open in NSW.

Esperance is the only store set to be closed in Western Australia on Australia Day, but Woolworths has warned that stores in the west will operate on public holiday trading hours rather than their normal times.

BUNNINGS WAREHOUSE

Those planning to capitalise on their day off by getting stick in to a home maintenance project will be pleased to hear all Bunnings stores will be open on January 26.

Store hours will vary nationally. The Bunnings Warehouse website is the best place to find details for your local store.

CHEMIST WAREHOUSE

Most Chemist Warehouse stores will be open at regular hours on Thursday, but customers have been advised to check in with their local branch over the phone or online, particularly those located inside shopping centres, which may be closed for the public holiday.

HARVEY NORMAN

A public holiday presents an excellent opportunity to move-in a heavy kitchen appliance or replace some furniture, and Harvey Norman stores will be open across Australia for those keen to spend Thursday working on their interiors.

Customers should check online for modifications to their local store’s opening hours, with many opting to open later and operate for shortened hours during the day.

JB HI-FI

Anyone needing a replacement speaker or a HDMI chord on short notice will be in luck on Australia Day, with JB Hi-Fi stores open nationwide. Shoppers can check for exceptions in shopping centres and in parts of South Australia and Western Australia via the store’s website.

KMART

Kmart stores will be open nationally on January 26, with exceptions in Western Australia and South Australia.

Customers are advised to check their local store’s trading hours, as they may have been altered for the public holiday.

The Kmart stores which will be closed are Esperance in WA, and Churchill, Firle, Ingle Farm, Kurralta Park, Marion, Munno Para, Port Noarlunga, Tea Tree and Westlakes in SA.
